By now, spring is in full swing, and a lot of you have been hard at work cleaning up, clearing out, and getting things back in shape. That’s what we like to see.
But while you’re tossing things out, let’s take a minute to talk about something just as important as cleaning up… recycling the right way.
Recycling helps keep our communities cleaner and reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. But for it to really make a difference, it has to be done correctly.
One of the biggest things to remember is to keep your recyclables clean and dry. Items like bottles, cans, and containers should be rinsed out before going into the bin. Leftover food or liquids can contaminate other materials and make them unusable.
It’s also important to know what should and shouldn’t go into your recycling container. Not everything can be recycled, even if it looks like it can. Things like plastic bags, greasy pizza boxes, and certain packaging materials can cause problems during processing.
When in doubt, it’s better to check or keep it out rather than risk contaminating the whole load.
Another tip is to avoid overfilling your recycling bin. Just like with your regular trash, keeping things contained and properly placed helps ensure everything gets picked up and handled the way it should.
Tote always says, “Recycling only works when we all do our part,” and that’s about as simple as it gets.
Taking a little extra time to sort things properly helps protect our environment and keeps our neighborhoods looking their best.
